The Story and Meaning Behind Our Logo
Zonguldak Karaelmas University was established with the enactment of Law No. 3837, as published in the Official Gazette No. 21281 dated July 11, 1992. The university’s name was later changed to Bülent Ecevit University through Article 18 of Law No. 6287, published in the Official Gazette No. 28261 on April 11, 2012. Subsequently, with Article 6 of Law No. 7141, published in the Official Gazette No. 30425 on May 18, 2018, the name “Bülent Ecevit University” was amended to “Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University.”
Zonguldak, the first province of the Republic of Türkiye, was declared a province by transforming the “independent sanjak” into a full administrative unit according to Article 60 of the Law on the Fundamental Organization (Teşkilat-ı Esasiye) dated April 1, 1924 and numbered 491.
The roots of the university lie in the School of Mining Engineering (Yüksek Maadin ve Sanayi Mühendis Mekteb-i Alisi), which was the first higher education institution in the Republic of Türkiye to train mining engineers. This school was established in 1924 by a decision of the Ministry of Commerce in response to the shortage of qualified mining technical personnel.
Although officially founded in 1992, Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University—with its origins tracing back to the 1924-established Mining School—adopted 1924 as its founding year by a Senate resolution in 2023, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye. Due to this updated founding date and the celebration of the university’s centennial in 2024, a decision was made to revise the university’s corporate logo.
Accordingly, the outer ring of the logo is colored red, symbolizing both the blood of our martyrs and our glorious national flag. Red also represents energy and mineral wealth, reflecting Zonguldak's identity as the energy hub of Türkiye due to its rich coal and natural gas reserves. Additionally, it symbolizes the dynamism and potential of our students, each considered a unique gem being prepared for the "Century of Türkiye."
At the center of the logo is the Uzun Mehmet Monument, erected by the Turkish Hard Coal Enterprise in memory of the 50th anniversary of the Republic. This monument is locally referred to as the "Three Mehmet Monument," representing three figures:
-
The first Mehmet symbolizes a martyred soldier,
-
The second Mehmet, a martyred miner, and
-
The third Mehmet, the legendary first martyr of mining, Uzun Mehmet.
The monument is designed in turquoise, a color formed by the blend of green and blue—reflecting Zonguldak’s image as the "City Where Green Meets Blue." Turquoise is also recognized globally as a symbol of Turkish identity. Positioned beneath the monument in the logo is a book, signifying education, and all of these elements are encased within the red ring—together representing the university’s commitment to the flag, national history, martyrs, and natural beauty of our homeland.
